Insights Gained About Early Literacy Behavior

1.) How do parents influence their child’s behavior?

A week or two before this assignment, I had voluntered to accompany my three year old niece to school and waited for two hours until her class ended and we go back home. During those times I noticed a child who still does not want her father to leave her inside the classroom. Later I was able to learn why the child behaves that way because her father told me that her daughter was not used to be with other kids or other people aside from them and her siblings.

My niece was also raised up that way the only difference is that her aunt and older cousins often bring her along with them to a mall or to any other places that would help her get familiar with large crowds . We also bring her along with us going to church on Sundays or sometimes during the daily masses. The school that she attends happens to be just inside the premises of the church. She also treats her older cousins as her friends and upon watching them go to school during school days, influence her mind to thinking that going to school must be good because her friends go there. These are the main factors why she easily overcomes that so called separation anxiety which is only natural for a child to feel anxious when the parents say goodbye. This is only one of the many scenarios I have observed on how parents influence their child’s behavior. 

2.) What insights have you gained from actual observation?

Prior to my niece schooling she already knows how to identify primary colors, count from one to three, identify primary shapes (square, rectangle, circle, oval), can sing two to three lines of nursery rhyme and surprisingly she can pronounce three to four words in a sentence well. But one thing that I have observed from her is that if somebody she is not familiar with asks her questions, she tends to shy away. She also does not show interest in practicing writing her name.

One day I asked her if she wants to study her lessons with me and she obliges and I  said go get your book. As usual she would scan the book by herself and looking for pictures that she likes, typical for a child at her age. Later she reaches a page of the book about shapes and there was an exercise about connecting the dots on a shape. So I asked her if she would like to connect or trace those dots in a square form and she again willingly obliged. As she goes on tracing those dots I noticed that she would transfer the pencil that she was holding from her right hand to her left hand and I asked her why and she told me that her right fingers were tired from holding the pencil and so I said okay you can rest for a while but I said that she should always use her right hand when holding her pencil. As I go along observing her tracing those dots I noticed that she has difficulty tracing those straight lines. That is the time when I realized that the muscle of her right fingers was not yet fully develop to control the grip of her pencil. And from that day on I just encourage her to draw whatever irregular shapes she would like for the purpose of practicing those fingers on how to hold the pencil well and waiting for the right time to ask her or teach her again how to write her name on a piece of paper.

Basing upon my observation I believe that the parents play a vital role in the acquisition and development in their child’s learning. Because the parents knows firsthand the weaknesses and strengths of their kids. Then, upon relaying this information regarding their child’s behavior to the preschool teachers there is now a collaboration between the parents and the preschool teachers which are relevant to successful early childhood literacy.

I felt blessed that I have been to Singapore for 3 days last year courtesy of my wife because she was invited by her cousin who lived and work there together with her husband and their two kids. 

During those times of my visit I was really impressed on Singapore’s urban planning. It seems everything were cleverly planned and designed in such a way that every square meter of their total land area was properly utilized. Their office buildings, Industrial sites, housings, recreation centers, malls, botanical gardens, tourist destinations (etc.) were carefully arranged in strategic places to maximize the efficiency of their transportation system (especially the MRT and LRT System) and thereby getting fast and easy transport from one point of destination to another. It also avoids waste of time from traffic going to their workplaces to and fro.

Not counting their Changi International Airport which is one of the best in the world. This is a very impressive feat for a tiny island nation like Singapore, only one third the size of the total land area of Davao City. How I wish our beloved country would achieve what Singapore has reached today or perhaps surpassed them in terms of economic success. I think the K to 12 program of DepEd is a big step forward on realizing that dream, guiding and preparing school kids to become advance learners and be highly competitive in their chosen field while molding others to become our future leaders and good decision makers someday taking the reign and make our nation great.
